At Green Genius’ 120.8 MW solar park in the Jēkabpils region of Latvia – the largest single-site solar park in the Baltic states – a 25 MW / 100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) has commenced commercial operations. Equipment for the second development phase is already arriving on-site, which will double the system’s power and energy storage capacity to 50 MW / 200 MWh.
Deploying a battery energy storage system at the 120.8 MW solar facility makes it one of the region’s largest independent flexible generation hubs. The first-phase 25 MW / 100 MWh system is now commercially operational and connected to the electricity transmission grid. The delivered second-phase battery modules and power inverters will double capacity in the near future, allowing it to store surplus solar power during peak production and discharge it during peak demand, or provide essential frequency response and grid-balancing services.
“In the renewable energy sector, expanding generation capacity alone is no longer sufficient – generation control and flexibility have become decisive factors. The operational solar park in Jēkabpils, integrated with the battery storage system, directly addresses transmission grid constraints and generation intermittency. Delivering the second-phase equipment and expanding capacity to 50 MW / 200 MWh will maximise infrastructure utilisation, deliver stable returns, and provide the grid services required for the independent operation of the Baltic power grid,” says Ruslan Sklepovič, CEO of Green Genius.
Energy Storage and Hybrid Projects in Lithuania
The Jēkabpils project advances Green Genius’ ongoing strategy to develop large-scale hybrid energy hubs combining renewable generation with utility-scale battery storage. In Lithuania, the company already operates and develops a substantial storage portfolio:
- Jurbarkas District: A 49 MW / 196 MWh commercial BESS is connected to the grid adjacent to an 80 MW wind farm. The storage system is the largest in the country by energy capacity and can discharge at its maximum power output for four hours.
- Šeduva: A 78 MW solar park with an integrated 15 MW / 60 MWh battery energy storage system is energised and connected to the Litgrid transmission network.
- Butrimonys (Alytus District): The installed battery facility became the first commercial storage system in the country to actively deliver market balancing services (aFRR and mFRR), fully integrated with local solar generation capacity.
- Izabelinė (Ignalina District): A new solar park is currently under construction, featuring a 17.3 MW / 69.2 MWh battery storage system engineered for the efficient integration of renewable energy into the transmission grid.
